In 1896, Col. Griffith J. Griffith gave funds in his will to build an observatory, exhibit hall, and planetarium on this donated land. Construction began in 1933 and opened to the public in 1935.
Originally called Agricultural Park, the 160-acre site served as an agricultural fairground from 1872 to 1910. Horses, dogs, & camels competed on a racetrack where the rose garden now blooms.
