The Rhino Shield coating system traces its roots back to the 1960s. At the time, NASA needed to create a coating to protect its rockets from the elements. Ordinary paint failed to provide the necessary protection. Instead, a precursor to Rhino Shield that employed ceramic microspheres emerged as a solution. The product proved both resilient and attractive. Forty years later, NASA buildings coated with this technology remain virtually unchanged in appearance. Rhino Shield is free of the mineral and chalk fillers found in paints, which are not meant to protect or insulate. Ceramic microspheres do both. In 2003, a magazine focusing on the painting and coating industry published details describing the benefits of using ceramic microsphere technology. Since then, Rhino Shield has emerged as the leader in this industry.
