Jeffrey Zeldman: Lovely residential beach resort, Long Island Sound on one side, Atlantic t'other. Arrive by ferry. Stay in family, singles, or gay communities. Sadly, ticks from wild deer population = health hazard.
Jeffrey Zeldman: Russian neighborhood a short walk from Coney Island. 30 years ago it was $1 vodka shots & Russian grandmas in girdles. Now it’s swanky restaurants. B or Q train to Brighton Beach; 45-60 min ride.
Jeffrey Zeldman: Getting there: Take Long Island Railroad from Penn station or David Brothers Taxi from Manhattan (68th St. and Third Ave. or 53rd St. and Second Ave.) to Bayshore, then take ferry to Fire Island
Jeffrey Zeldman: Well manicured, relatively uncrowded beach accessible via LIRR. Nice little diners & suburban houses. Great place to get Long Island (as opposed to Brooklyn) flavor of NY summer beach. Beach fees.
Jeffrey Zeldman: Expensive but nice boutique hotel. Private cabanas. Elegant dining (not much for kids besides french fries, though). Reserve south-facing room overlooking the Atlantic.

Jeffrey Zeldman: Isolated, uncrowded beach with nude, nude gay, and trans sections. Impossible to reach by subway, but NYC Beach Bus has cheap R/T fares from Williamsburg.
New York Habitat: One of the largest urban beaches in the U,S., this beach offers a long boardwalk, food vendors and a surfing area where you can ride the waves!
